Sustaining the Momentum of Anti-Racism in Business

The ‘Sustaining the Momentum of Anti-Racism in Business’ symposium is brought to you by students from UNC-Chapel Hill and NCCU Schools of Businesses for a singular purpose, to address issues surrounding inequities within corporate systems and to assess the role we play in being conduits for change.   Amidst the backdrop of a global pandemic, the country experienced several months of social unrest in 2020.  Within these months young people from across the globe rose in solidarity to march and protest in hopes to bring attention to systemic issues that continue to sully the lives of black and brown people.  The march and protests were ignited by the killing of black citizens by the hands of police officers, from which subsequent demonstrations ensued and controversial historical symbols that adorned our capitals were torn down.  Companies were also made to adjust offensive brand names and imagery to demonstrate their sensitivity to the narrative that had for decades illustrated African Americans in offensive and oppressive ways.

It is time to take a stand, have hard conversations and recognize the role we play in speaking truth to power.  As we prepare for entry into an evolving landscape it is important that we are given the skills needed to address race and racial issues in a productive and progressive way.

From a special keynote and fireside chat, to panel discussion with executives, breakout sessions and Q&A sessions, we hope to create long-term strategies to withstand any potential regression as time marches on.

Students attending this event will leave it understanding how issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion show up in various environments.  They will understand how best to handle situations that come up in ways that both articulate their commitment to just practices and influence equitable policies.  Participants will leave this experience with a broader awareness of their role in combating racism in the workplace and beyond.
